White Paper - Superior Power Efficiency in Silicon Carbide (SiC) Inverter Technology

Silicon carbide (SiC) inverters offer efficiency gains that extend well beyond peak operating points.

This white paper presents measurements obtained at customer testing sites, examining how CISSOID’s SiC inverter technology compares with an IGBT-based system and what the results mean for electric drivetrain design. In a comparison at 650 V DC using the same motor, the SiC inverter increased peak efficiency from 96.6% to 98.9%, more than doubled maximum output power and raised maximum torque by 58%. Separate testing demonstrated peak efficiency of 99.6%.

The paper explores performance across the operating range, including partial-load conditions, and explains how coordinated semiconductor, gate-driver, thermal and motor-control design delivers these gains. For engineers developing heavy-duty vehicles and industrial drives, the findings highlight opportunities to reduce cooling requirements, improve power density and lower system mass and energy consumption.
